A Google click for "austin dwi lawyer" is priced at about $45. The same kind of search in Houston is about $12. That gap decides how an Austin DWI firm should split its marketing budget between paid ads and organic search.
The numbers below come from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (US database, checked Sept 29, 2026). Cost per click is an estimated average of what advertisers pay. Your real price depends on your bids, ad quality and competitors, so treat it as a guide to the market, not a quote.
What Texas DWI searches cost
| Search phrase | Monthly searches | Est. cost per click | Organic difficulty (0-100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| austin dwi lawyer | 450 | $45.00 | 37 |
| austin dwi attorney | 250 | $35.00 | 48 |
| dwi lawyer austin tx | 150 | $30.00 | 37 |
| dallas dwi lawyer | 1,000 | $25.00 | 58 |
| san antonio dwi lawyer | 400 | $18.00 | 14 |
| houston dwi lawyer | 500 | $12.00 | 0 |
Three things stand out.
Austin is the most expensive DWI market in this group. Its three main phrasings sit at $30 to $45 per click. Dallas has more than twice the searches for "dwi lawyer" than Austin, yet costs about half as much per click.
Small changes in wording change the price. "Austin dwi lawyer" costs $10 more per click than "dwi lawyer austin tx", even though both mean the same thing to the person searching.
The search volume is modest. The three Austin phrasings add up to 850 searches a month. That is a small pool, so every click matters, and a poor landing page wastes a lot of money.
What $45 a click means in practice
Suppose an Austin firm buys 20 clicks on "austin dwi lawyer". That is about $900. If only one of those visitors becomes a signed client, the ad cost of that client is around $900 before any staff time. If none of them do, the firm has still spent $900.
That example is an assumption, not a benchmark. Your own intake numbers are what matter: how many clicks become calls, and how many calls become signed clients. If you do not track those, paid ads at this price are a gamble.
Where organic search fits
Ahrefs rates "austin dwi lawyer" at 37 out of 100 for organic difficulty, which is moderate, and estimates that the top page for it could draw about 1,000 visits a month from all related searches. Compared with Dallas at difficulty 58, an Austin firm has a more realistic chance of ranking a strong page.
Organic traffic is not free, because it takes months of content, links and a clear page. But a visitor from an organic result does not cost $45 each time.
A practical split for a firm starting from scratch:
- Fix the basics first. A page for each core service, one clear phone number, mobile speed, and the pages your state bar rules require.
- Build one strong Austin DWI page that answers what people actually ask after an arrest. Do not write for search engines only.
- Use paid ads for the phrases that convert, and pause the ones that do not. Track calls by source.
- Review monthly. Keep spending where signed clients came from.
Advertising rules still apply
Whatever you pay for, the ad and the landing page are lawyer advertising under the Texas Disciplinary Rules. We cover what each page needs in "Texas Lawyer Advertising Rules 7.01 to 7.06 for Websites". This post is marketing information, not legal advice.
